Oil Paintings by Doug DeBoon, Peace River, Alberta
Description
Story on the back:
Doug DeBoon grew up by the waters of the Peace. He was one year old when his father, Bas, moved north with his young family in 1966 to drive a concrete mixer truck to help build the bridge across the Mighty Peace River.
“I never thought, before I went to high school, that I would have any interest in art.” Yet, Doug felt nudged to sign up for the art option. Linda Laliberte, the art teacher at Peace High, saw his first oil painting, recognized his giftedness, and said, “This is what you’re going to do…!” She invited him to paint in her garage studio every Tuesday. This opportunity not only helped him develop as an artist; “It kept me out of trouble too,” he jokes. Doug did commissioned work while in high school and got paid $50 for each album cover for musicians.
After Doug finished college, he and his brother, Ron, bought their father’s business, and Doug’s painting was replaced with roofing and concrete work. He promised himself, “Once I retire, I’m going to start painting again.”
Thirty years later, here he is, at last, in his studio above RBC. “I love it!
I paint every day now! Life is good!”
Doug is an active member of the Peace River Art Club. His work is on display in his studio, at the ART HUB, at J’s Java Domain, and in several businesses in town. He welcomes commissioned work – even album covers!
The joy of his focus is detail, and “It’s all about the colour.”
